Threads of Time - Woven History of the Andes

Weaving is one of the oldest and most symbolically rich artistic traditions in the central Andean region, an area that includes present-day Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, northwestern Argentina, and southern Colombia. The earliest known Andean textiles were discovered on the northern coast of Peru and date to about 3000 BC. These dazzling works of art are remarkable for the skills required to create them, the complexity of their designs, and their vibrant colors. Extensive use of natural dyes.

Weaving is Life
The Edwin L. and Ruth E. Kennedy Southwest Native American Collection

This exhibit includes Diné (Navajo) weaving from 4 generations of weavers, including naturally dyed tapestry. Weaver D. Y. Begay assisted in preparing the exhibit and some of her naturally dyed weaving are included.

This exhibition is drawn from the Kennedy Museum of Art's outstanding collection of Southwest Native American weavings and jewelry items, including a rare assemblage of Navajo sandpainting textiles. The exhibition explores how the objects displayed exist at the intersection of a complex web of cultural discourses that reflects traditional Native American cultural practices and modes of representation as well as 20th-century market influences and evolving Euro-American museological and collecting methods. It features objects selected in consultation with a broad variety of individuals representing this multi-cultural environment, including Native American artists and scholars, spiritual leaders, tribal cultural preservation officials, traders, dealers, collectors, museum professionals, art historians, and anthropologists. The exhibition is curated by Jennifer McLerran, Ph.D., Kennedy Museum of Art.
