The Rules of Composition

Nothing like
a true horizontal to start your day.
Sure, the hills trace a rugged profile
against the feathered white and blue above,
the trees stand at decent intervals,
arranging themselves nicely,
but it’s the bay
that holds the composition together,
giving a baseline to everything else,
being somehow flat and full at the same time.
In seeking its own level,
water finds the part of us that needs settling.
The best line of all
is the straight one.

Appetizers

Gout starts in the big toe,
arthritis in the index finger,
melanoma on the forehead.
Death nibbles around our edges
and then, after a while...
takes a big bite.
